Reaching the top

Up in the roof of the Victorian Alps — a scenic drive from Melbourne, or a short seasonal flight straight onto the mountain.

By road: Roughly four and a half to five hours from Melbourne. The classic approach climbs through Bright and Harrietville, then up the Great Alpine Road to the village. In winter you'll need wheel chains in the car — check road and weather conditions before you make the climb, and allow extra time in snow.
By air: Mount Hotham has its own airport about 20 kilometres from the village, with seasonal flights during the snow season. When they're running, it's by far the quickest way onto the mountain — you can be clicking in the same morning you left the city.
Once you're here: Stay up in the village and the car stays parked for the trip. With ski-in, ski-out accommodation at Zirky's, the lifts, the restaurant and the shop are all a few steps from the door — no shuttle, no daily drive up the hill.
When to come: The Victorian snow season generally runs from the June long weekend through to around late September, with conditions best mid-season. Being high and exposed, Hotham tends to hold snow when lower resorts struggle.
